Background of the Study

Memory and language recall are fundamental cognitive processes that significantly influence communication, especially in dynamic urban environments. Nigerian Pidgin, a widely used lingua franca among urban populations, exhibits unique linguistic structures and idiomatic expressions that test conventional models of memory recall (Adebisi, 2023). In bustling metropolises, where Nigerian Pidgin functions as both a tool for everyday communication and a marker of cultural identity, understanding how memory processes facilitate language recall is essential. Recent research has highlighted that the inherent variability and flexibility of Nigerian Pidgin can affect how speakers encode and retrieve linguistic information (Chima, 2024). Factors such as frequency of usage, context-specific expressions, and code-switching between Nigerian Pidgin and English play crucial roles in shaping memory performance. Cognitive theories suggest that the distinctive features of Nigerian Pidgin, including its simplified syntax and phonetic innovations, might influence the efficiency of memory retrieval processes (Ekwueme, 2025). This study seeks to assess memory and language recall mechanisms among urban Nigerian Pidgin speakers by integrating behavioral experiments with neuropsychological assessments. The goal is to delineate how urban linguistic environments and the cognitive load associated with bilingual communication impact the retention and recall of Nigerian Pidgin expressions.

Statement of the Problem

Existing research on memory and language recall has predominantly focused on standardized languages, leaving Nigerian Pidgin underexplored. Urban speakers often exhibit variability in language recall due to the dynamic nature of Nigerian Pidgin, which may not align with traditional memory models (Adebisi, 2023). The fluidity of expressions and frequent language switching contribute to challenges in encoding and retrieval processes. Moreover, methodological limitations in previous studies have hindered a comprehensive understanding of how urban cognitive demands affect language recall. Addressing these gaps is vital for developing models that accurately represent memory processes in the context of Nigerian Pidgin, particularly as it pertains to its use in informal, high-paced urban settings (Chima, 2024; Ekwueme, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the mechanisms of memory and recall in urban Nigerian Pidgin speakers.

2. To identify factors affecting language recall in dynamic urban environments.

3. To propose refined cognitive models tailored to Nigerian Pidgin.

Research Questions:

1. How do urban environments influence memory and language recall in Nigerian Pidgin speakers?

2. What cognitive factors affect the encoding and retrieval of Nigerian Pidgin expressions?

3. How can existing memory models be adapted for Nigerian Pidgin?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it investigates the cognitive underpinnings of memory and language recall in Nigerian Pidgin, offering insights into the interaction between urban linguistic practices and cognitive processes. The outcomes are expected to inform educational and communication strategies that account for the unique characteristics of Nigerian Pidgin, ultimately supporting effective language use and cultural identity in urban settings (Adebisi, 2023; Chima, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing memory and language recall in Nigerian Pidgin among urban populations, with a focus on behavioral and neuropsychological measures.

Definitions of Terms:

• Memory Recall: The process of retrieving stored information from memory.

• Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely spoken in Nigeria characterized by simplified grammar and extensive borrowing from English and local languages.

• Urban Populations: Residents of densely populated metropolitan areas.
